A university president like Wilson, Eisenhower had never served in elected office.
A military man like Kennedy, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan (sort of), and Bush 41, Eisenhower obviously rose higher in the military than any of them. In fact, Eisenhower is more comparable to some of our 19th century presidents (or even our first president) than he is to his contemporaries in the 20th century. Yes, we had elected generals to the Presidency before, but not many of them were re-elected to a second term.
