When Samantha DeWitt of the Inquisitr wrote her "Meet Diane" post on Thomas Road Baptist Church and dancing, it looked Photoshopped enough to warrant a visit to the original source. However, I could get no farther than Blog of Hilarity, which simply linked to trbc.org and simply stated that the ad was from the church.
Lisa responded in the comments:
Um, sorry but wherever this came from it’s fake. In fact, that church has worship bands, singing, dancing, and all manner of charismatic stuff.
Now I don't know if Blog of Hilarity is a Phil Hendrie-like thingie, or if TRBC would tolerate charismatic utterances (doesn't sound Baptist to me), but I was intrigued enough to see what types of ministries Thomas Road Baptist Church does offer.
And I came across this.
Yes, Thomas Road Baptist Church has a motorcycle ministry.
Liberty Riders, is a ride group/motorcycle ministry of Thomas Road Baptist Church. We have 3 purposes:
1) We’re a ride group . . . we get together as a group and go for rides to enjoy fellowship with each other, and to enjoy some of God’s great creation.
2) We do outreach ministry . . . we co-sponsor with TRBC various outreach events....
3) We teach, train and equip . . . we have biker style classes available to help you learn more about God and about motorcycling....
So, no matter what kind of bike, trike or hack you may ride; no matter how colorful your background may be; no matter what patch you may or may not wear; even if you’re between bikes, that’s OK – come hook up with us. We are here for you. We want you to know that God loves you and so do we. If you or someone you know is interested, then come check us out – you have nothing to lose. We think you’ll be glad you did.
And if you think they're just doing this because Jerry's not on the scene any more, take a look around - they actually honor Jerry with one of their rides:
The “Doc” Falwell Memorial Toy Run –
Held in December, this toy run is held to honor our friend and Pastor, Jerry “Doc” Falwell for all he did to help the children in the community. There’s a group ride to where the toys will be collected, and if you want, you can help to distribute the toys right there to a lot of needy children, who would otherwise not be able to enjoy Christmas. It’s a HUGE blessing for everyone.
According to the Lynchburg News Advance, this year's Toy Run will take place on Sunday December 21.
The “Doc” Falwell Memorial Toy Run, presented by TRBC and Liberty Riders. Meet at Thomas Road Baptist Church. Special worship service at 8:30 a.m. with coffee and donuts at 9:30 a.m. Police escorted ride rolls out at 11:15 a.m. Bring new unwrapped toy. For information, call (434) 239-9281 or visit http://www.trbc.org.
Or if the bikers intimidate you, go see Santa Claws at PETsMART.
