Exasperation

One of the dangers of blogging is not that you reveal personal information about yourself, but that you reveal personal information about others. For this reason, I will be very vague in this post.

There was someone that I know who has had a dream for over a year now - a dream about pursuing an adventure.

This person had, as I've noted, thought about pursuing this adventure for more than a year. The person had committed to the adventure, planned for the adventure, dreamed about the adventure, and talked about the adventure.

On Monday, the person left home to set out on the adventure.

By Tuesday, the person was back home, the adventure temporarily derailed - and possibly permanently derailed.

This is what I refer to as a James 4 moment.

If you're not familiar with what I'm talking about, perhaps this will help:

James 4:13-15 (New International Version)

13Now listen, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money." 14Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. 15Instead, you ought to say, "If it is the Lord's will, we will live and do this or that."

Several weeks ago - nay, several months ago - this person would have said with assurance, "By the middle of June 2008 I will be in the middle of my big adventure." It just goes to show that we never know what's going to happen.
