AllAfrica.com posts an article about an earlier Nigeria election. Here is an excerpt:
the Commission on Wednesday, October 25, 2006 commenced a nationwide Voter Registration Exercise. The exercise was conducted in all the Polling/ Registration Centres across the Country. The exercise ended on February 2, 2007 with 61,567,036 Nigerians registered as voters.
Being a new introduction, the exercise experienced teething problems some hitches at the beginning. For instance there were inadequate supply of the machines at the beginning. The pace of the operators was also not fast enough. However, with the later supply of additional machines and the extension of time for registration, the exercise ended very successfully. The final figure registered was within projection based on universal standard.
On conclusion of the nationwide voter registration exercise, the Commission took further step to consolidate and clean the data obtained from the field. The main objectives of the exercise include:
• To consolidate the entire data for each State into one single database.
• To eliminate multiple Registration; and
• To effect any other correction on the register.
The final stage of the consolidation exercise culminated in the running of the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) to ensure a clean register.
