You won't have Cindy Sheehan to kick around any more

Cindy Sheehan's love-hate relationship with the Democratic Party took a turn for the worse:

Cindy Sheehan, a dead soldier's mother known for her protests near George W. Bush's Texas ranch, says she is quitting and going home because she is as disgusted with the U.S. president's Democratic foes as with his Republican supporters.

"This is my resignation letter as the 'face' of the American antiwar movement," she said in a letter posted Monday on a liberal website, dailykos.com....

[W]hen she broke with the Democrats over their reluctance to cut off war funding, she found herself under fire from Democrat bloggers, she said.

The U.S. troops in Iraq "have been abandoned there indefinitely by their cowardly leaders who move them around like pawns on a chessboard," she lamented, saying she would return to California to rebuild her life.

You'll recall that she considered challenging Dianne Feinstein for the U.S. Senate Democratic nomination last year. And she was challenging Hillary Rodham Clinton as early as 2005:

In an interview after her speech, Sheehan told the [Village] Voice she was “so frustrated” by leading Democrats like Clinton “who should be leaders on this issue, but are not.” Already, she has set up a future meeting with New York’s junior senator this weekend. And she plans to sit down with the state’s senior senator, Chuck Schumer, too. “It’s time for them to step up and be the opposition party,” she said. “This war is not going to end unless the Democrats are on board with us.”

It will be interesting to see if she avoids the spotlight, or if she re-emerges under a new political banner.
