I Love You Each, I Love You All...No Matter What Galaxy You Come From

Followup to a bunch of posts. I almost have as many "Star Wars" posts as I do MSN Photos Server posts.

Antonio Villaraigosa and Jan Perry court the geek vote. Actually, they're courting money from the film industry, but close enough.

What will you do tomorrow?

2007 City of Los Angeles, State of California Resolution:

Star Wars Day
May 25th, 2007

Whereas, the epic 1977 space-fantasy film Star Wars, with its simple morality tale of good versus evil "a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away," has become one of the most beloved and acclaimed motion pictures in history, capturing the imaginations of fans worldwide across multiple generations over its thirty-year history;

and whereas, Star Wars and its creator George Lucas initiated a renaissance in the movie industry, helping redefine and advance the arts of cinematic storytelling and motion picture visual-effects technology, inspiring a new generation of moviemakers, writers, artists, and even scientists to pursue their dreams;

Note that the point above is the only point that Villaraigosa and the City Council care about. It wouldn't be prudent to mention that much of this movie was filmed in England. Back to the wherases:

and whereas, Star Wars has been honored with scores of international awards, including seven Academy Awards for cinematic excellence, and is entered in the U.S. National Film Registry of the Library of Congress as a "culturally, historically, or aesthetically important" film;

and whereas, Star Wars has roots in Los Angeles, with George Lucas having attended the University of Southern California Film School before founding Lucasfilm, Ltd.;

and whereas, Star Wars has been firmly ingrained in the world's popular culture, with its vernacular and characters entered both into the Oxford English Dictionary and common vocabulary, and with frequent reference in entertainment, parody and popular song;

and whereas, members of Star Wars' worldwide fan community have been inspired by its message of heroism and honor to carry out frequent and ongoing charitable and philanthropic acts, united in their common interest to perform good works for their local communities while celebrating their affection for Star Wars;

and whereas, Star Wars today celebrates the thirtieth anniversary of its original release, including an opening at Grauman's Chinese Theater, with the Celebration IV convention at the Los Angeles Convention Center, welcoming thousands of Star Wars enthusiasts from around the world;

now, therefore be it resolved that by the adoption of this resolution, the Los Angeles City Council recognizes George Lucas' 1977 film Star Wars for its tremendous impact on the citizenry of Los Angeles, the film industry and the world, and for continuing to inspire after thirty years millions of people to explore movies, fantasy, literature, and science as means of achieving their goals and dreams.

Some of my co-workers are very enthused about this, one is only enthused because Lucas donates to her alma mater, and one is trying to run away from it.

A simple morality tale? Episode 4 maybe, but the machinations in the six-movie series make Oedipus Rex seem like a nursery tale...
