I'm back home after several days in Las Vegas and Henderson, Nevada (with a visit to Yermo, California on the way back). While I was traveling, Josh Scanlan posted his views of Las Vegas. Here are some excerpts:
For my first time in Vegas I was hoping to have a high up hotel room with a great view of the city so I could look out with the wonderment of a 12 year old boy who just saw boobs for the first time on the internet. Nope, our rooms were on the first floor looking into a...wall.
To be fair, I don't think that any room in Vegas is necessarily going to give you a good view, since the rooms are on the Strip itself, and you can't really get a good perspective of the whole thing - at best, you'll get a perspective of the hotel right next to yours. Ironically, the fact that I was several miles east of the Strip probably gave me a better view of the Strip itself.
I love to gamble and I really have no idea why. It was very much troubling to me that I only had to walk down a hallway and hang a right and I’m in the middle of a...casino with [its] attractive lights and noises, with a pocket full of cash.
And, if you haven't figured it out already, casinos are not designed to allow you to easily get from one end to the other. I didn't hit the Strip on this trip, but on our last trip we wanted to take the kids to Everything Coca Cola and M&M's World, and the MGM Grand casino was between the parking lot and the attractions. I figured I'd be smart and stay on the street, outside of the MGM Grand, which would have worked well if the street hadn't been blocked off at one point.
Back to Josh:
Vegas itself was not what I expected at all. It’s trashy. You have dirty strip malls that serve no purpose but to be made fun of and there are mexicans standing every 10 feet handing out porno cards for what I can only imagine are dirty, dirty whores.
And Josh, that's ON the Strip. (Incidentally, when my young niece went to Las Vegas a few years ago, she was very freaked out by the guys who were handing out the dirty pictures.) I don't know how much time Josh spent OFF the Strip, but trust me - the Strip is one of the less trashy parts of the city.
All in all, it's a very interesting town, since in some respects it's trashy Vegas, while in other respects it's fast becoming yet another suburb of Los Angeles. Heck, you can find In N Out Burger there, and Tommy's there, and I figure it's just a matter of time before Stater Brothers starts opening grocery stores there.

I figured out quickly that casino's weren't the easiest to maneuver. We stayed in Excalibur and it took us a little bit to figure out where to leave and even longer to find the cashier.
To be fair to Vegas, I only saw about half of the Strip and nothing else. I'm sure there are some very nice parts of Vegas. Actually I'm very interested in moving there, or at least some place close. I could use some warm weather and constant poker in my life. Now all I have to do is find a job!
I don't think of Vegas as a warm weather place due to the temperature extremes in winter, but if you're approaching it from an Iowa perspective you're probably right. It will get below freezing, but not much more than that.
By the way, I forget if I mentioned this or not, but when we DO stay on the Strip, we often stay at the Excalibur. I'm a member of their club, but don't gamble enough to earn anything from it.
